Company Development
2009 has seen the biggest change in the structure of Fablevision since her inception in 1984. After 25 years of charitable trading, the organisation has embraced the social enterprise model.
As of 2009, the charity is an umbrella – an asset owning holding company. The assets are both intellectual (our ethics, our values, our history and the projects and products we have developed over the years) and in terms of material assets like equipment and capital.
The charity continues to create the vision, the direction and apply for grant funding or charitable donations, but the bulk of the trading activity is conducted through the Business Support Unit, Studios, Transform TV and The Cultural Planning Institute. By December 09, only one of these, Studios is a fully-fledged social enterprise trading arm. With Government support and continuing input from our colleagues in various support agencies, our intention is that all of these will be established, trading social enterprises with their own boards, management structures, business plans and targets by the autumn of 2010
We are indebted to our colleagues in Impart Management, and CEIS, Senscot and Shona Sinclair sent to us by Firstport for their support of our visioning, developing business plans and bids for Enterprise Funding respectively.
Most recently, we have engaged the services of Lister McDonald who use the Executap methodology. Having realised that moving from charity to social enterprise requires more than just business solutions, it requires a whole transformation in mindset, thinking and vision, it has been an invaluable support for the board and staff teams at Fablevision to go through the Executap process and create a shared vision for the future of the company towards the next 25 years.
