Continuing our contribution to the National Cultural Planning Forum's
major research initiative, "Rivers and Regeneration" , Sparr explores
the potential of a cultural planning approach to the regeneration of Glasgow's
Govan - an approach designed to be a complete contrast to the top down,
commercial developer led approach on the North side of the river.
The voluntary and community sector in Govan have been spearheading a cultural planning approach to the regeneration of Govan for almost a decade with individual successes like Linthouse Urban Village and Govan Portal seeing themselves as part of an overall vision co-ordinated by the Creative Network and Roots in the Community. Sparr is a collaboration involving Govan based Cran Theatre Company and Theatre Hebrides in Stornoway. It traces the cultural links between Govan and the Western Isles which began with Columba and continued through emigrations during the Highland Clearances to migrant workers seeking employment in the burgeoning ship building industry. Sparr is designed to be a celebration of cultural planning approach to the regeneration of 21st century Govan led by its vibrant voluntary/social enterprise sector as well as a celebration of those historical Hebridean links.
