One of our longest running projects, the Royston Road Project is a community-led company limited by guarantee that aims to create stronger communities in the Royston Road neighbourhoods through arts-led regeneration.
"It really all started in 1997 with a few determined
people working together in a last minute bid to save the Townhead
Spire. On the very first day we gained national TV coverage through
the action of George Wylie, burning a cross in front of the Spire.
This bold intervention helped us to see that artists could provoke
change!"
Rev. Russell McLarty, Chair of the Royston Road Project
Not only did George Wylie's fiery cross (a Highland symbol that
acts as a call to arms) bring people together to save the spire,
this momentous community action catalysed a series of regeneration
initiatives:
- The creation of a community park around the spire
- A new park channelling a section of Glasgow's historical Molendinar
Burn
- Artists residencies including the creation of a new breed of rose
- A competition to name the rose and a “rose-drop ”on
every doorstep
- Collecting messages from local people to broadcast into space through a radio transmitter made by local teenagers
