Backlands - In Partnership with Copperworks Housing Co-op and Royston Road Project
Fablevision has been working in partnership with Royston Road Project for the last 10 years and most recently, our collaboration has expanded to include public space development with Copperworks Housing Co-op. Focussed on "The Backlands" (derelict land between tenement blocks which has blighted the community for decades) the Imagined Space project transported local people out of the area to dream and scheme.
Local residents worked with David Jenkins (landscape architect) in the drawing up of innovative plans for the shared space, the construction phase provided jobs and training for local people and finally, on Saturday, 28th October 2006, the opening event animated the new space: a festival to celebrate the redevelopment of what was once a wasteland, but is now a creative space to be used by all the neighbourhood.
'Imagined Space', written and designed by Gerry Cambridge, gathered memories, photographs and images from local residents. The final publication looks at the Backland's historical connections with people of the area, as well as how the new space can be used for the future.
